Because of its close affiliation with the Mennonite Church, Sunshine Inc. has a long history with the quilting community dating back to the late 1950s. Quilting and other handcrafts have been practiced by Mennonite and Amish women for decades. In fact, one of Sunshine's initial contacts with the Mennonite community revolved around the "Mending Ladies"- Mennonite women who still come to the facility each month to mend residents' torn clothing.
Residents at the Children's Home live in home-like units of 6-8 people, each named after a different quilting pattern-Log Cabin, Concord, Lancaster, etc. Quilts decorate the walls of the Children's Home and add a homey touch to residents' beds.
For more than 30 years, Sunshine has raised funds through the auction sale of premium quilts, wall hangings, comforters and afghans made by our Mennonite and Amish friends, other local churches, quilt guilds and individuals.
For 27 years, the sale was called the Sunshine Bazaar & Quilt Auction and was held at the Southwyck Mall in Toledo. In 2001, the event was moved to the Fulton County Fairgrounds and renamed the Black Swamp Benefit Bazaar. Sunshine and our sister charity, Mennonite Central Committee, split the proceeds from that event, which is held annually on the third weekend in June. |
