The Black Swamp event is Sunshine's largest fundraiser and has become the biggest fundraising event in Fulton County. It is also the largest quilt and handmade furniture auction in Northwest Ohio. The centerpiece of the Black Swamp Benefit Bazaar is the main auction of handmade quilts, wall hangings, furniture and wood pieces that takes place on Saturday morning. Hundreds of items are donated by Sunshine and MCC supporters each year to be sold at auction. Other highlights of the Black Swamp Benefit Bazaar include: Nearly 20 homemade food booths Huge children's activity area Children's toy auction Ten Thousand Villages sale Home and Garden area with comforters, crafts, and live artisan demonstrations Youth mud volleyball tournament Bullfrog 5K Run/Walk Silent Auction/Quilt Preview Show on Friday night Pancake breakfast The sale is operated by Black Swamp Benefit, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation established to raise funds for, and awareness of, Sunshine Inc. of Northwest Ohio and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). A 12-member board of Sunshine and MCC volunteers leads the organization. For those who are unfamiliar with MCC, it is the relief arm of the Mennonite Church. Among other things, MCC provides people, food and material goods to communities in the United States and around the world who are recovering from war and natural disasters. For more information on MCC, visit their web site. The MCC/Sunshine partnership has been a good fit. The two organizations have worked together before on disability-related projects. Sunshine is a local Mennonite charity and MCC is a national/international Mennonite charity, creating a nice balance for our shared donors to support. The Black Swamp Benefit Bazaar takes place annually on the third Friday and Saturday of June at the Fulton County Fairgrounds in Wauseon, Ohio.
